Harris celebrates 5 years with Public Works; officials grateful

It’s been five years since Randy Harris took the lead as Norwood Public Works Director, and he told the Forum it's been a “whirlwind of learning” for him since then. Harris, who oversees the water treatment plant, water service lines, town roads and the parks, plus sanitation, is busy with maintaining existing infrastructure but also looking at projects in the pipeline for the Town of Norwood.

“We have a lot of projects in the works right now from the redundant waterline, town drainage, lagoon rehabilitation project and all the new growth,” he said. “The redundant line is moving along fast now. There's been so much board and community effort pushing this project that you can see the light at the end.”

Mayor Candy Meehan told the Forum she estimated $3.75 million had been secured out of the $10 million needed for the redundant line. Another meeting was scheduled for this week for a funding opportunity.

Meanwhile, Norwood’s new school has broken ground on the south side of town.

Regarding the water treatment plant, Harris said it’s not a priority at this time.

“Our treatment plant has quite a bit more life in it, but does no good if we can’t deliver it,” he said, referring to the aging infrastructure of existing waterlines and the need for redundancy the town is working on.

The Forum asked Harris what a typical day was like for the Public Works crew. He said there really isn’t one.

“Our priorities can change in minutes,” he said.

Meanwhile, he admitted many may not know what’s going on behind the scenes.

“A lot of our best work goes unnoticed, and that's usually a good thing,” he said. “If water’s flowing, streets are open, and you haven't had to call us, we are probably having a good day.”

Regarding employees, he said there’s not been much turnover.

“We have built a good team over the years,” he said. “We've had little change over the five years and have maintained a solid crew.”

He said of Cory Colombo, Earl McWilliams and Austin Overholt that each bring unique traits and skills, and he couldn’t ask for better people.

Harris said he’s ready for what’s next in town.

“We've accomplished a lot in five years, but we're not done yet,” Harris said. “We've got a great crew, awesome support and a lot to look forward to. With the new school, town taking over that property and infrastructure upgrades, good things are coming for Norwood.”

Mayor Candy Meehan said she was appreciative of Harris’ work for the town.

“(He) exemplifies what public service is all about,” she said. “Over the past five years, he has led with integrity, humility and an unwavering commitment to the people of Norwood. He has continually invested in his education, certifications and professional growth to ensure our community is prepared for the future. As we navigate major projects like our new school and continued community growth, I have complete confidence in Randy’s leadership, his technical expertise and, most importantly, his genuine love for this community. Norwood is fortunate to have someone so dedicated to serving others.”

Town Manager Sara Owens said Harris is overseeing everything from the park maintenance, roads, water, sanitation and also offering support for all public events.

“Working alongside Randy has been a pleasure,” she said. “His patience runs deep, and his dedication to our community is unwavering. Randy brings a calm perspective to every situation, which adds confidence to his crew, their work and our community.  I’m grateful to work with such a smart individual.”
